02-05-2008 Boris Johnson wins Mayoral Contest

Boris Johnson was today named as Mayor of London following an eight month campaign from the Conservative Party primary contest in September through to the London-wide election on May 1st.

Boris won with 1,168,738 first and second preference votes, compared with Ken Livingstone's 1,028,966 on a record turnout of 45%.

Boris Johnson fought a long and energetic campaign which saw him repeatedly in all of London's 32 boroughs promising change for the better. He built upon the Primary campaign where he set out his stall for a greater London and visited all of London's Boroughs within a 16-day whistlestop tour.

The campaign focused heavily on learning from the real experiences of Londoners and presenting solutions which would resonate with voters. Innovative campaigning techniques were used such as building up supporters via the BackBoris website, enlisting taxi drivers with BackBoris receipt books and an extensive media campaign which secured the support of The Sun, The News of The World, The Times, The Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph and Evening Standard.

iNHouse PR started working with Boris Johnson in July 2007 when he first announced he would be running for Mayor of London.

Read what the Evening Standard today said about the role of iNHouse PR during the Boris Johnson campaign:

"Constantly at Mr Johnson's side were media strategists Jo Tanner and Katie Perrior, known as the Trinny and Susannah of political PRs. They had a full-time job keeping their man out of mischief and convincing the media he was a serious operator. The women, who have set up their own firm, iNHouse PR, are tough operators and quickly gained a reputation for dealing firmly with unfriendly media."
